Read the analysis by constituent
Separate free or dispersed oil, suspended particles and dissolved constituents in the feed-water data. Each category can require a different process. A separator or filter may improve clarity while leaving salinity largely unchanged. State the intended reuse or discharge target by parameter so a general promise of clean water cannot hide a missing treatment function.
Define what the base package actually removes
Ask the supplier to map each treatment stage to the contaminants it is intended to address. Review limitations involving emulsions and changing chemistry. If desalination is required, evaluate the appropriate additional process with representative water data and the necessary pretreatment. High salinity, fouling and scale-forming constituents can materially change the feasible operating arrangement.
Include the concentrate and residual streams
A process that separates dissolved material creates another stream requiring management. Quantify reject or concentrate, sludge, backwash and cleaning waste as applicable. Include these streams in the site balance and cost comparison. Do not accept a treatment yield figure without knowing what quantity and quality remain for disposal or further processing.

Keep these observations with the equipment reference and operating conditions. When comparing proposals or service findings, check that each record describes the same configuration and duty. Resolve missing inputs with the responsible engineer before treating an estimate as an accepted operating limit.
Connect treatment performance to an agreed water envelope
Start with representative inlet data and a parameter-by-parameter outlet requirement. Identify sampling methods, expected variation and the operating conditions under which performance is evaluated. A package name such as filtration or oil removal does not describe every contaminant it can address. Ask for a process flow diagram showing the function and boundary of each stage, including treatment functions assigned to equipment supplied by others.
Account for product water, retained material, backwash, sludge and other residual streams in the same balance. Where trials are appropriate, retain the sample history and test conditions so results can be compared with the field feed. Outlet requirements must come from the project and receiving system; a general industry reference is not a site-specific discharge authorization. Review how off-spec water is held or routed and who approves release. This makes treatment performance an observable operating condition rather than an unsupported claim attached to a nominal flow rating.
Apply the review to the offered oilfield wastewater treatment system
Use produced-water or flowback analysis from the actual project, with expected variability. Separate reuse, reinjection and discharge objectives rather than treating them as interchangeable. Each destination needs its own water criteria and residual-handling plan, even when some treatment stages are shared.
- Water chemistry: record the project range and identify whether the value is measured, calculated or still provisional.
- Oil and grease concentration: state the accepted limit and the equipment or process boundary to which it applies.
- Total dissolved solids: include variation through the job instead of relying only on the normal operating value.
- Reuse or discharge target: identify the responsible supplier or site team and the evidence needed before acceptance.
- Variable-flow equalization: review the case that governs this requirement and retain its basis with the equipment records.
