Produced Water Hydrocyclone Package: Purchase Requirements

A deoiling hydrocyclone offer should explain the inlet conditions and hydraulic operating range it supports, not just list a nominal treatment capacity.

Describe the oil fraction to be separated

Provide representative oil-in-water data, temperature, solids, upstream chemicals and information about free or emulsified oil. Ask what additional characterization the supplier needs to assess the proposed separator. A total oil number alone does not describe droplet behavior or establish the suitability of a hydrocyclone. Keep sampling conditions and upstream operating changes visible so the selection refers to the water reaching the equipment rather than an unrelated sample.

Review the available hydraulic conditions

Show feed pressure, downstream pressure, normal and peak flow and the expected operating range. Ask the supplier to identify its required hydraulic conditions for the offered liner arrangement. The available pressure must be assessed at the package boundaries, including connected piping and control equipment. A catalogue flow capacity does not prove that the separator will operate as intended when the actual pressure relationships or flow split are different.

Ask how turndown will be handled

Describe periods of reduced production, well changes and planned variations in water flow. Request the supported operating envelope and the method proposed for maintaining suitable conditions across it. Identify manual or automatic changes and the equipment included in the offer. Do not assume that a package selected for peak flow will give equivalent performance at every lower rate without configuration changes or a reviewed control strategy.

Include the oil-rich reject destination

Request the expected stream balance and identify where the oil-rich reject will be collected or returned. Review the pressure, capacity and compatibility of that destination with the responsible process designer. Separating oil from water moves it into another stream; it does not remove the need for downstream handling. Keep recovered-liquid routing, controls and purchaser-supplied connections inside the scope comparison so competing offers use the same process boundary.

Tie purchase acceptance to the selected arrangement

Ask for the proposed liner configuration, material scope, operating assumptions and process evidence relevant to the submitted feed. Agree which hydraulic and functional checks are possible at the factory and what performance requires site water. Identify inspection, replacement access and spare-liner requirements. Keep accepted deviations with the purchase order rather than treating a reference installation or general product brochure as evidence for every future water composition.

Compare hydrocyclones within the complete treatment train

Clarify whether the package is intended for bulk deoiling, intermediate treatment or protection of a downstream polishing stage. State what oil, solids and dissolved constituents remain outside its duty. Compare inlet assumptions, outlet expectations and reject handling on the same basis. If another supplier proposes a different separation method, assess the process consequences and supporting evidence before comparing equipment prices. The required result is the agreed water destination and operating service, not ownership of a particular technology name.

Suggested wording for the quotation request

Please select a produced-water deoiling hydrocyclone package for the attached feed analysis and hydraulic operating cases. Identify the liner arrangement, supported flow range, pressure assumptions, materials and reject requirements. Include controls, access, replacement parts and battery limits. State the evidence supporting the selection and distinguish factory checks from site-water performance verification. List feed exclusions and any additional characterization required before final technical approval.

Compare the complete treatment duty rather than one advertised removal percentage. Keep representative water analyses, flow variation, required outlet quality and residual destinations together in the purchase specification. Identify what each proposed stage removes and what remains in the treated water, recovered oil and waste streams. Agree utility assumptions, operating responsibilities and configuration-specific evidence before ordering. Installation, chemical handling, sampling and maintenance must follow the accepted project design, supplier instructions and approved site procedures. Equipment selection does not itself authorize discharge, reuse or disposal.

For the wider equipment scope, consult the Produced Water Treatment: Oil Removal vs Salt Removal. Use the RFQ checklist to collect the supporting documents before requesting a configuration-specific quotation.

Buyer questions

Does hydrocyclone treatment remove dissolved salts?

No. Its separation duty should not be treated as desalination or proof that the water meets every reuse requirement.

Can one nominal flow rating define the purchase?

No. Review the supported hydraulic range, oil characteristics, configuration and reject routing at the actual installation boundaries.

Background and supplier contact

Produced-water treatment technology background offers related background, not certification of the equipment in a quotation. Applicability must be checked for the project and destination.
